France orders military action in Syria with US, Britain

May ready to bypass Parliament & approve UK military intervention in Syria – BBC

The strikes early on Saturday came in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack in the former rebel stronghold of Douma last weekend.

Trump blamed Iran and Russian Federation for their support of the Assad regime, saying Moscow has failed to live up to its guarantee to make sure the Syrian government got rid of its chemical weapons.

SANA reported the joint operation hit a research centre northeast of the capital as well as other military installations around Damascus but said missiles targeting army depots in Homs had been intercepted.

AFP's correspondent in Damascus said several consecutive blasts were heard at 4:00 am local time (0100 GMT), followed by the sound of airplanes overhead.

He reaffirmed Russia's view that a purported chemical attack in the Syrian town of Douma that prompted the strike was a fake.

The wave of strikes is the most significant attack against President Bashar al-Assad's government by western powers in seven years of Syria's civil war.

Trump said Assad's recent attack was a fallout of Russia's "failure" to keep the promise of eliminating Syria's chemical weapons.

Johnson tweeted Saturday that he welcomed the news of the military strike against major chemical weapons facilities in Syria in concert with "our USA and French allies".

He added: "This will reduce the regime's ability to further attack the people of Syria with chemical weapons".

Israel says in response to the American-led strike in Syria that the Middle Eastern country's "murderous actions" put itself in danger.

It said three civilians were wounded in the Homs attacks but did not give a toll for Damascus or mention any combatant casualties.

A senior official in the regional alliance that has supported Assad in the Syrian war told Reuters the attack on Syria will be seen as limited if it is now over and there is no second round.

"On April 7, dozens of men, women and children were massacred in Douma, with the use of a chemical weapon in a total violation of worldwide rules (.) The red line established by France in May 2017 was crossed", Macron said in a statement.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis did not say whether he believed the strikes would deter Assad from using chemical weapons again. They said a chemical weapons research facility, a sarin gas warehouse and another chemical weapons storage facility were the targets for the airstrikes.

Congressional leaders are supporting President Donald Trump's decision to launch airstrikes against Syrian President Bashar Assad in retaliation for an apparent chemical attack against civilians _ although there are some reservations.

The attack also drew criticism from many of Trump's most ardent supporters in the US.

The UK has begun air strikes against Syrian chemical weapons sites.

"Our warnings have been left unheard", Russia's ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, said in a tweet on Saturday morning.
