Mississippi Girl Scouts donate cookies to local heroes

Girl Scout Troop 6000 New Yorks first homeless shelter-based troop participates in the troops first cookie sale in Union Square Manhattan in April 2018

The girls have a goal of selling 12,000 boxes of cookies. Founding members of the troop couldn't wait to sell their first cookies, and finally got to set up their stalls this year. Additionally, the proceeds of Kellogg's NYC specialty menu items will be donated to Troop 6000, according to the cafe's website.

'Traditionally, Girl Scouts builds community and consistency, it gives girls skills they'll need in their future, and it empowers young women, ' Burgess, the troop's leader, said. Last July, New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio announced the city would invest $1 million over a three-year period in the group. Karina, one of the founding members of the troop told Refinery29, "I wasn't expecting [becoming homeless] to ever happen to me".

They have been working throughout the week between 4 and 6 pm out of the Kellogg's Cafe in Union Square, Manhattan, with an initial goal of selling 6,000 boxes in total. The troop, which is exclusively for homeless girls in the city, has set up shop in Union Square and are holding their very first Girl Scout cookie sale. When it first launched, they had eight girls.

Retired military personnel residing at the Armed Forces Veteran's Home in Gulfport received cookies this season from Troops 3402 and 6346 from St. James Catholic Church.

There were 100,000 homeless children in New York City schools in 2015-2016.

Research has shown that young women involved in Girl Scouts have a stronger sense of self, and achieve higher levels of education, and are more likely to reach a higher socioeconomic status.

"My favorite part of the camp is being on the water, teaching girls to do new things, teaching them to swim, and not to be afraid of the water", Robinson said.
