Police called to hospital protest for terminally ill boy Alfie Evans

Alfie's Army supporters show up in front of Alder Hey hospital

The baby's father, Tom Evans, said he had air ambulance on standby to take his son for treatment in Rome but that police prevented him from taking Alfie out of the hospital.

And today they returned to protest further against the decision taken by Mr Justice Hayden, who ruled that it was in Alfie's best interests for his treatment to be withdrawn.

The couple have already lost legal fights in the High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and European Court of Human Rights.

Mr Evans said an appeal would be heard on Monday and the family hoped to go to Italy for treatment next week.

On Thursday evening, "Alfie's Army", which includes over 130,000 Facebook friends, answered livestreamed calls from Tom Evans and his family. We can only imagine what could happen when Alfie receives proper diagnostics and standard humane care, and the parents are prepared to love and care for their son in any case.

Footage posted online showed Alfie's parents receiving huge applause as they joined the significant crowd of protesters who were chanting Alfie's name.

His father has argued he should be able to take his 23-month-old son home as he approaches death.

"I have documentation that says I have the right to take my son out of the hospital".

"This is my son". However police blocked them from getting Alfie and leaving.

He said: "The alarm was pulled and police were alerted and within a matter of 15 or 20 minutes I had three police officers round the bedside telling me that Alfie was a ward of court and they had been notified by the hospital and if I touched my son I would be arrested for assault". Look at my healthy, healthy young boy who's undiagnosed and is certainly not dying.

"How can this come to this?"

The toddler has a rare degenerative neurological condition which is attacking his brain. In Alfie's situation, that would only be practical with the support of a team of medical professionals with the necessary life support equipment.

"Please note that access to the hospital is now being disrupted and protesters are asked to be respectful of other patients and visitors trying to access the location".

Merseyside Police said the protest on Thursday was peaceful but "did cause significant traffic disruption and inconvenience for other people trying to access the hospital".

The demonstration came a day after a judge endorsed an end-of-life care plan for Alfie drawn up by specialists.

He said details of that plan could not be revealed because Alfie was entitled to privacy at the end of his life.

The release made clear the family's wishes to immediately remove Alfie from Alder Hey Hospital and fly him to Bambin Gesu Hospital in Rome, which has offered him "free treatment for the rest of his life".
