Premier League clubs vote against VAR

Premier League clubs vote against use of VAR for 2018-19

Premier League clubs have voted against using a video assistant referee (VAR) system next season.

Testing of VAR technology will continue in the background next season, while Premier League clubs have asked that the technology be used in more FA Cup and League Cup ties too. It is also not always obvious to spectators inside the stadium when the match referee is calling upon the system or indeed what exactly is the incident he wants reviewed.

Supporters have been left bewildered while games have been stopped for long periods of time while decisions were being made.

"The decision came after comprehensive discussions regarding the progress made in VAR trials in English football, and key learnings from the many competitions elsewhere using it", said a statement.

The Premier league clubs approved for the test run to be continued using the FA cup and the Carabao cup within the season.

Premier League officials want the system to be implemented for FA Cup and League Cup matches again next term.

They will carry on the experiment next season with more VAR games in cup competitions and the possibility of it being used in the Premier League as a trial run with the results not being used.

"We are all agreed it took a little long for all decisions. I prefer the referee's decision is final".

While Serie A and the Bundesliga have used VAR this season, as well as the Football Association having it for the FA Cup this season, England's top flight competition will not have the technology. "It's not ideal in the moment".

VAR will be used at this summer's World Cup in Russian Federation after being rubber-stamped by the FIFA Council last month, a move which FIFA president Gianni Infantino accepts may lead to controversy.

VAR will not be introduced to the Premier League next season after the clubs agreed on Friday that more testing is required.
