Russian Federation accuses United Kingdom of staging Syria gas attack

Oh what a lovely war! Thought of Syria strikes galvanizes breathless British media

This evening I have authorized British armed forces to conduct coordinated and targeted strikes to degrade the Syrian Regime's chemical weapons capability and deter their use.

U.S. President Donald Trump said he was prepared to sustain the response until the government of Assad stopped its use of chemical weapons.

He warned that intervention would lead to a proxy war with Russian Federation which would be "not only unsafe to Britain, but the entire world".

May said she would address parliament on Monday about the strikes.

She said the strikes were "right and legal" to "prevent further humanitarian crisis".

May said the strikes would "send a clear signal to anyone else who believes they can use chemical weapons with impunity".

"I have done so because I judge this action to be in Britain's national interest", she added.

Four RAF Tornados fired Storm Shadow missiles at a former missile base near Homs, following late-night talks between Theresa May, Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump.

"We can not allow the use of chemical weapons to become normalised - within Syria, on the streets of the United Kingdom, or anywhere else in our world", she said.

Despite her careful language, there was immediate criticism from opposition lawmakers who said May should have consulted parliament before joining US-led action in Syria.

Russia, which intervened in the war in 2015 to back Assad, has denied there was a chemical attack and has accused Britain of helping to stage the Douma incident to stoke anti-Russian hysteria.

Prime Minister Theresa May during a press conference in 10 Downing Street, London on the air strikes against Syria.

For his part, the leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), Gerard Batten, opposed the British military action in Syria.

Meanwhile, Britain's main opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn described the US -led military strikes on Syria jointly staged by three leading Western countries as a "legally questionable action", saying that the British government should "not taking instructions from Washington".

"We have. evidence that proves Britain was directly involved in organising this provocation", defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said.

"We have sought to use every possible diplomatic channel to achieve this", the prime minister said.

"Our service personnel have played an important role in terms of degrading the ability of the Syrian regime to use chemical weapons in the future", Williamson said.

He reiterated that Canada condemns the use of chemical weapons in Ghouta.
