New York Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud will have season-ending Tommy John surgery, the team announced on Friday. Will be updated. With AP Photos.

Plawecki sustained the injury Wednesday night when he was hit by a pitch from the Marlins' Tayron Guerrero. While a postgame X-ray was negative, an MRI showed a hairline fracture.

Previous year was d'Arnaud's most productive as a big leaguer.

A lengthy absence was expected for d'Arnaud, who was diagnosed with a partial tear of his right UCL on Wednesday.

Tomas Nido is now the only backstop on the Mets' 25-man roster with d'Arnaud and Plawecki sidelined.

Plawecki and Mets manager Mickey Callaway initially had said that X-rays were negative, but the catcher underwent a follow-up MRI on Thursday's off-day upon returning to NY, which revealed a hairline fracture.

The Mets estimate a three- to four-week absence, but in any case, as injuries go, these seem tolerable.

D'Arnaud went on the disabled list Wednesday for the fifth consecutive year and was transferred to the 60-day DL on Friday.

D'Arnaud's decision to have surgery comes two days after the Mets placed him on the 10-day disabled list with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow. The Mets also called up Jose Lobaton from Triple-A Las Vegas to help share the load.
