Trump tells Gardner the Justice Department won't interfere with Colorado's legal marijuana

"Since the campaign, President Trump has consistently supported states' rights to decide for themselves how best to approach marijuana", Gardner said in a release. Gardner said in January he would block all DOJ nominations after Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued a memo that heightened the prospect of a federal marijuana crackdown on states that had legalized it.

High-profile elected officials in Colorado supported the state's right to continue selling recreational pot.

U.S. President Donald Trump endorsed letting states decide how to regulate marijuana, in a major boost for the legal pot industry, Colorado Republican Senator Cory Gardner said.

Market Pulse Stories are Rapid-fire, short news bursts on stocks and markets as they move.

"Late Wednesday, I received a commitment from the President that the Department of Justice's rescission of the Cole memo will not impact Colorado's legal marijuana industry", said Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., speaks to reporters in the Ohio Clock Corridor after the Senate Republicans' policy lunch on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018.

Former House Speaker John Boehner, a staunch anti-legalization lawmaker, made the decision to change course on cannabis after he joined the board of directors of Acreage Holdings, a New York-based cultivator that operates in 11 states.

President Donald Trump has promised to support legislation protecting the marijuana industry in states that have legalized the drug, a move that could lift a threat to the industry made by the USA attorney general just three months ago.

Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., listens as President Donald Trump speaks before hosting a lunch with Senate Republicans in the Roosevelt Room of the White House in Washington on December 5, 2017. Under Mr. Sessions's approach, US attorneys in states where pot is legal were given approval to prosecute cases where they see fit.

But Trump has held a sharply different view from Sessions on the issue.

Gardner said Friday he is lifting the remaining holds on Justice Department nominees. But those positions only accounted for six of 22 nominees Gardner had blocked, and he has since blocked a dozen more. It may be modeled on a 2014 budget amendment that prevented the Department of Justice from spending money to enforce federal laws against marijuana users and businesses in states that legalized the drug and were following all applicable state laws. Gardner and the Department of Justice have been in discussions for months to get the holds lifted. At a separate press conference, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed that the President and Sen.

Senator Gardner reiterated that he and his colleagues "are continuing to work diligently on a bipartisan legislative solution (to the state/federal conflict) that can pass Congress and head to the President's desk".
