Watchdog confirms Skripal poisoned with nerve agent

The nerve agent used to poison Sergei and Yulia Skripal was delivered in a liquid form More

Japan's foreign minister has expressed hope that facts including who used chemical weapons to attack a former Russian spy in Britain are uncovered as soon as possible.

Following the release of OPCW's conclusion, British foreign secretary Boris Johnson said: "That was a military grade nerve agent - a Novichok".

The worldwide chemical weapons watchdog has said an analysis of samples gathered from Sergei Skripal, Yulia Skripal and detective sergeant Nick Bailey - the officer affected during the emergency response - confirmed the U.K.'s assessment of the incident.

Russian Federation carried out secret tests on how to smear deadly nerve agents such as Novichok on door handles, Britain claimed today in a bombshell dossier of evidence against Moscow in the Salisbury poisoning case. The Kremlin must give answers, ' he added.

Skripal, 66, and his daughter, 33, were admitted to a hospital after being found unconscious on a public bench on March 4 in Salisbury.

The UK embassy in Moscow repeated accusations that Russian Federation breached the Chemical Weapons Convention, saying it must be held to account at the OPCW and UN Security Council over the Skripal poisoning.

In a letter to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation secretary general Jens Stoltenberg, Sir Mark also revealed that intelligence chiefs had identified the laboratory where Novichok is believed to have been developed in the Soviet Union and said that after its collapse Russian Federation had continued producing the toxin.

The incident has drawn comparisons to the 2006 death of former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko after drinking radioactive tea.

An explosive United Kingdom intelligence dossier made public Friday claims Russian Federation tested the use of door handles as a way to infect people with nerve agents before an ex-spy and his daughter were poisoned exactly that way last month. The Twitter series detailed Britain's reasoning as to why Russian Federation is behind the poisoning in Salisbury, after which the Skripals were left in a critical condition.

Russian Federation has denied any involvement in the chemical weapons attack in England, which hospitalised ex-spy Sergei Skripal, his daughter Yulia, and a police officer. Before the exchange, he had been serving a 13-year prison term for leaking information to the British intelligence.
