Chopra wins 1st gold for India in javelin event

On day 10 of CWG 2018, The Historic and maiden gold medal for India in Athletics as the 20-year-old Neeraj Chopra won gold in men's javelin with a season-best throw of 86.47m.

From the veteran Mary Kom to the first-timer Neeraj Chopra, India's athletes struck gold, silver and bronze on a medal-filled Saturday.

None in the field could surpass that till the very end and it was left to Neeraj to up the ante, which he did with a season's best 86.47m in his fourth attempt. In August past year, he won a gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championships in Bhubaneshwar with a mark of 85.23m - the best-ever throw recorded in Indian soil. His victory was a forgone conclusion after Olympics and world silver medallist Julius Yego of Kenya failed to qualify for the final round on Friday.

"I've been totally relaxed here, I've enjoyed myself". He also became the fourth overall and third-ever Indian man and to grip an athletics medal after Milkha Singh in 1958, Krishna Poonia in 2010 and Vikas Gowda in 2014.

The player gave a flawless shot in the very first throw achieving the qualifying mark.

"One shouldn't be too serious in life, it's good to be disciplined but you should not overdo food restrictions", he added, waxing lyrical on a host of subjects. "As for me, I was not under any pressure or nerves, I was well-prepared", he said. Vipin Kashana, the other Indian in the fray, took the fifth spot with an attempt of 77.87m.

In the men's 4x400m relay, the Indian team had to pull out midway through the race after Amoj Jacob pulled a hamstring.

Arpinder Singh's dreams of a second bronze was dashed by Marcel Mayak of Cameroon, who came up with a personal best of 16.80m in the triple jump.

Although he had already qualified for the Commonwealth Games, he challenged himself and set a new record in Indian soil of 85.94m, in what was his final attempt of the competition. The latest to do so amongst a long line of Indian names was Indian track and field athlete - Neeraj Chopra.
