Downed power line ignites 'major' Armstrong County brush fire

The fire near Woodward was estimated at 115,000 acres

A northwestern Oklahoma town has been evacuated as wildfires rage in the state.

Officials reports that containment of a 60,000-acre (24,282-hectare) fire straddling the New Mexico-Texas line was at 90 percent in New Mexico and 75 percent in Texas, where fire officials said one home and another building were lost.

In Dewey County, the Rhea fire has burned an estimated 19,000 acres and is expected to continue growing, officials reported about 7:30 p.m.

The fires were burning on a mountain and a mesa about 15 miles (24 kilometers) northwest of Grants and started Thursday, one because of an abandoned campfire and the other from an unknown cause.

"I'm asking all Oklahomans to be vigilant and careful, and to do their part to prevent fires", Fallin said in a written statement.

Walker said the blaze in Dewey County has burned about 82,000 acres.

Dry conditions and high winds were contributing to brush fires around the region Friday.

"We've got historic conditions as far as fire".

Firefighters are reminding people in the area of elevated fire risks after a brush fire broke out in Beckley Thursday evening. In Beckham County, westbound lanes of Interstate 40 at Erick were off-limits to traffic, and State Highway 34 was closed from Vici south to Camargo.

The fires' spread comes as the United States faces a trio of risky weather possibilities this weekend: Besides the critical fire danger in Oklahoma and the Southern Plains, severe storms and tornadoes are forecast in the Mississippi River Valley, and heavy snow is expected for the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest. An additional fire is located southwest of Vici.
