Federal Bureau of Investigation reportedly sought records on 'Access Hollywood' tape in Michael Cohen raid

FBI agents raided the New York offices of President Trump's longtime personal lawyer Michael Cohen

U.S. President Donald Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen drives after leaving his hotel in New York Thomson Reuters WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, is seeking a temporary restraining order regarding searches of Cohen's home and office by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents on Monday, a Justice Department spokesman said on Friday.

One final intriguing aspect of these events is the fact that the raid was conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY, not Special Counsel Bob Mueller's Office.

"What they are trying to do is use attorney-client privilege as a sword to challenge the government's ability to review evidence" obtained lawfully, McKay added.

Trump also said that "many people" have said he should fire Mueller, who is investigating Russian election interference and possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Attorney-client privilege allows clients to discuss their legal troubles with lawyers, protecting them from being incriminated by said correspondence.

Daniels' lawyer, Michael Avenatti, is pleased with the feds' raid of Cohen's apartment.

Under Justice Department regulations, Mueller must consult with Rosenstein when his investigators uncover new evidence that may fall outside his original mandate.

They also downplayed the scope of potential privilege, saying they had before Monday secretly searched multiple email accounts belonging to Cohen, and which they said indicated that Cohen "is in fact performing little to no legal work".

Stephen Ryan, Cohen's lawyer, believes the Federal Bureau of Investigation raiding his client's apartment was unnecessary and inappropriate; Ryan reiterated that communications between Cohen and his clients are protected by attorney-client privilege.

McKay said Trump's ability to invoke the privilege is "no different" from anyone else's.

President Donald Trump's personal attorney is trying to prevent the government from using materials it found in a search of his office and residence this week.

Federal agents raided Cohen's Manhattan office and residence on Monday, seizing records on topics, including a $130,000 payment made to porn actress Stormy Daniels.

The cover comes after the Federal Bureau of Investigation earlier this week raided Cohen's office, seizing emails, documents and records, some of them related to his payment to adult-film star Stormy Daniels. He called Mueller's investigation "an attack on our country".

FBI and Justice Department officials in Washington and NY have refused to discuss the case publicly or say what crimes they are investigating, but people familiar with the investigation have told The Associated Press the search warrant used in the raids sought bank records, business records on Cohens dealing in the taxi industry, Cohens communications with the Trump campaign and information on payments made to a former Playboy model and a porn actress who say they had affairs with Trump. He did not disclose the reason for the court proceeding.
