Unnao rape case: Accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar arrested by CBI

The power employees’ unions rose up in arms in protest immediately after the Yogi Adityanath-headed cabinet on March 16 gave its nod for the proposal seeking to hand over electricity distribution in five cities to private franchisees

Kuldeep Singh Sengar who is the alleged accused in Unnao gang-rape case, has been sent to seven-day police custody on Saturday.

A CBI official said this was because they were only following the initial FIR filed by the Uttar Pradesh police.

His lawyer, Satyendra Singh did not oppose the CBI's application, saying, "We are willing to cooperate with the CBI in the investigation".

While in an address to media CM Yogi had said that accused MLA will be arrested and law and punishment is for everyone equally. The court underlined that in spite of complaint from the victim to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on August 17, 2017, no substantial action was taken by the police. The court also asked the CBI to present a status report in the case on May 2.

The bench passed the order on a letter written by senior advocate Gopal Swaroop Chaturvedi demanding a court-monitored investigation of the case, which was treated as a PIL.

"My uncles used to say that daddu (Kuldeep Singh Sengar) is very good", she told Aaj Tak TV.

Singh Sengar and his brother Atul Singh Sengar have been accused of raping a 16-year-old girl last June in a town in his constituency near the state capital, Lucknow. He also emphasised that government will take stringent action against the culprits.

Till the premier investigating agency takes over, the local police would continue with the probe, but a decision on whether the accused MLA from the ruling party would be arrested would be taken by the CBI, Principal Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar said.

Faced with the embarrassment of its own MLA being involved in the case, the state government had referred the matter to the Centre for CBI probe.

The teen had accused the MLA of raping her in June past year.

This comes a day after a senior BJP leader in Uttar Pradesh claimed that the Chief Minister had chose to arrest the accused MLA but his decision was changed after the intervention of a "prominent person". Meanwhile, the CBI has spoken to the rape victim and some of the witnesses and family members besides visiting the crime scene.

The Allahabad High Court took up suo motu cognisance of the case on Wednesday and on Thursday took a strong notice of the delay in the accused MLA's arrest. In a shocking move, the victim's father died in judicial custody with several injuries on his body.
