African leaders urged to emulate, sustain Winnie Mandela's legacies

WATCH: #WinnieMandela taken to her final resting place

Mabuza described Madikizela-Mandela as a true Mother of the Nation and an icon who stood against the then government that exiled her and even incarcerated her for fighting for the rights of the people of this country. Aremu hailed what he called consolidation of democratic process in Africa citing "the new development in Zimbabwe and successful swearing-in of President, Cyril Ramaphosa, as the 5th President of the Republic of South Africa following the resignation of former President Jacob Zuma".

She slammed those who came out following Madikizela-Mandela's death about the apartheid regime's propaganda machine aimed at tarnishing the icon's name, specifically mentioning the former police commissioner George Fivaz."Why have they sat on the truth and waited until my mother's death to tell it?

Her burning flame of passion shall continue to illuminate our lives, as we continue our struggle into its second phase -that of economic emancipation", he said.

"She expressed her gratitude and said she wouldn't miss the performance". It was those in power who, insecure and fearful, visited upon her the most vindictive and callous retribution. "They could not silence her".

A private gravesite ceremony will take place at the Fourways Memorial Park.

The labour leader urged trade unionists especially female unionists in Africa to "learn from the leadership example of Mama Winnie Madikizela Mandela", adding that as a stateswoman, "she was labour friendly, a working class stalwart who favoured minimum wage and decent work for the workers". I was grateful, but a part of me also knew that the chances of her not attending were quite high, given her frail health.

"She should be embraced as such because even years after we are gone, our children will also recognise her as such".

For many South Africans, the most memorable image of Madikizela-Mandela is of her punching the air in a clenched-fist salute as she walked hand-in-hand with Mandela out of Victor Verster prison, near Cape Town, on Feb 11, 1990.

In 1991, Madikizela-Mandela was convicted of kidnapping and being an accessory to assault, but her six-year jail sentence was reduced to a fine and a two-year suspended sentence on appeal.
