Arab Leaders Mute On Syria Strikes At Saudi Summit

Saudi Arabia's push for a tough stand against its arch-rival Iran is expected to dominate an Arab League summit on Sunday as regional tensions grow over the wars in Syria and Yemen.

According to Saudi Arabia's Minister for Foriegn Affairs, Adel Al-jubeir, the top agenda of the conference will be Palestinian status.

The summit begins 24 hours after the United States, France and Britain launched controversial air strikes in war-torn Syria in response to a reported regime chemical attack on the decimated rebel enclave of eastern Ghouta last week.

"We stress our absolute condemnation of the use of chemical weapons against the sisterly Syrian people and we demand an independent global investigation to guarantee the application of worldwide law to everyone proven to use chemical weapons", the group said in a statement.

"We renew our strong condemnation of Iran's terrorist acts in the Arab region and reject its blatant interference in the affairs of Arab countries", the King said.

His Majesty King Abdullah will head the Jordanian delegation to the 29th Arab summit, which will start in Saudi Arabia on Sunday.

"The heavy shadow of destructive Saudi policies is evident in. the final statement of the summit", Iranian state media quoted Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi as saying in Tehran.

US President Donald Trump's decision to transfer his country's embassy to occupied Jerusalem was a top concern for Jordan, which has tirelessly worked, making intense contacts at all levels and garnering wide global support for its stand in opposing the US move and supporting the Palestinians' right to set up their independent state.

Saudi Arabia, which is hosting the summit in its Eastern Province city of Dhahran, is likely to seek Arab support to pile the pressure on Iran, analysts say.

The summit also agreed on the necessity to secure the Arab World from the dangers terrorism poses and to work on combating terrorism and supporting all security, economic, social, cultural and intellectual means to preserve the Arab World's national security. Doha denies the charges.

The Qatari delegation will be headed by Doha's permanent representative to the Arab League, Saif bin Muqaddam al-Buainain, the state news agency said without elaborating.

As a chair of the 28th arab summit, His Majesty will deliver a speech at the opening of the summit, where Arab leaders will discuss wide-ranging issues of concern to the Arab world including latest political developments in the region. Trump publicly sided with the Saudis and Emiratis early in the crisis but is now pushing for a resolution to restore Gulf Arab unity and maintain a united front against Iran. It's not a big problem.
