Britain had no choice but to conduct air strikes, Theresa May says

"I ordered the United States armed forces to launch precision strikes on targets associated with the chemical weapon capabilities of Syrian dictator of Bashar al-Assad", Trump said in a live TV announcement from the White House Diplomatic Room.

Mr Corbyn, who has warned of an escalation in a "proxy war" between the U.S. and Russian Federation, said he would only consider backing intervention in Syria with the support of the United Nations.

The British leader's office said Cabinet ministers "agreed on the need to take action to alleviate humanitarian distress and to deter the further use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime".

May said the missile strike was created to minimize any civilian casualties and was not an attempt to change the Syrian government.

"We are prepared to sustain this response until the Syrian regime stops its use of prohibited chemical agents", the Trump said in a televised address, as quoted by Reuters.

"And a significant body of the information including intelligence indicates the Syrian Regime is responsible for this latest attack".

Mr Trump said the Syrian regime's use of chemical weapons on Douma was a "significant escalation in a pattern of chemical weapons use by that very bad regime".

"While the full assessment of the strike is ongoing, we are confident of its success", she added.

When asked if Syria's Assad could remain leader as long as he refrained from further use of chemical weapons, May said: "This was about, as I have said and you have recognized, this was specifically about the use of chemical weapons".

The Prime Minister is expected to face angry MPs after launching military action without securing the support of the Commons.

"The facility which was struck is located some distance from any known concentrations of civilian habitation, reducing yet further any such risk", it added.

On Friday, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn attacked Prime Minister Theresa May for risking "escalating an already devastating conflict" by expressing support for U.S. President Donald Trump's threat of military intervention.

In further remarks that could prove controversial after the Salisbury poisoning, Corbyn also called for "a shift from the rhetoric of endless confrontation with Russia", which he said could "help lower the temperature, and make a United Nations consensus for multilateral action to end Syria's agony more likely".

There is broad-based global support for the action we have taken,"pointing out that she has secured the support of a string of world leaders".

Many politicians in Britain, including some in Mrs May's own Conservative Party, had called for Parliament to be recalled from holiday to give authority to any military strike.

He reiterated that Canada condemns the use of chemical weapons in Ghouta.

"I think it is absolutely appropriate that the prime minister and the cabinet made this decision", he told Sky News.

British opposition lawmakers are calling for Parliament to be given a vote before any military action.

A YouGov poll in The Times conducted this week found that 43 percent of voters opposed strikes in Syria, with 34 percent unsure and only 22 percent supportive.

He also did not rule out future military action.

The former missile base was assessed to have been used by the Syrian regime to "keep chemical weapon precursors stockpiled in breach of Syria's obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention", the MoD said in a statement.
