Home hopes high for historic U.S. victory in Boston Marathon

Desiree Linden of Washington Mich. wins the women's division of the 122nd Boston Marathon on Monday

"It is with deep regret that I have to withdraw from tomorrow's Boston Marathon", she said in a statement through race management.

An American woman hasn't won the Boston Marathon since Lisa Larsen Rainsberger in 1985.

The women's field features American contenders Molly Huddle, Jordan Hasay, Desiree Linden and reigning New York City Marathon champion Shalane Flanagan. No US woman has won the Boston crown since Lisa Larsen Weidenbach in 1985, although Linden was second in 2011 and Hasay took third a year ago in her marathon debut as well as in Chicago.

Jordan Hasay has withdrawn from the Boston Marathon due to a stress reaction in her heel.

The cloud on Hasey's horizon, however, is that she has reportedly been suffering from a foot injury. Hasay, who is part of the Nike Oregon Project, finished in third place previous year.

Not since Joan Benoit and Greg Meyer took the crowns in 1983 have Americans taken both the women's and men's titles in the famed 26.2-mile showdown over the streets of Boston. The feat will require the dethroning of two defending champions from Kenya - Geoffrey Kirui, whose 2017 winning time of 2hrs 9min 37sec was 21 seconds ahead of runner-up Rupp, and Edna Kiplagat, who cruised to last year's crown.

Although Huddle's time in her marathon debut was on 2:28:13 she has the competitive temperament to make her second attempt at the distance even more memorable.

Among the thousands of racers who will lace up their sneakers on Monday, marking five years since the terrorist bombing, Shalane Flanagan is one to watch out for. The Nike-sponsored runner lost by 21 seconds to Kenya's Geoffrey Kirui past year and hopes to come out on top the second time around.

Shalane Flanagan becomes the first USA woman since 1977 to win NYC Marathon.

The field includes two other estimable Ethiopian past winners - Lemi Berhanu, who took the title two years ago, and Lelisa Desisa, who won in 2013 and 2015, making a widely acclaimed gesture after the first victory when he returned his medal to the city to honour those killed and injured in the bombings that disfigured the later stages of that race.
