Manchester City clinches 2017-18 Premier League title

Alexis Sanchez arrives at Manchester United's Carrington training ground on Friday morning

Jay Rodriguez played the hero for Manchester City as his goal handed bottom side West Brom a shock victory at Old Trafford and Pep Guardiola's men the title.

Over £12m was traded on the 2017/18 Premier League Winner market, but with City effectively running away with the title - eventually winning it with five games remaining - no team other then the winners traded at odds-on, or even notably shorter than their pre-season odds.

In addition, based on three points for a win, City's now tally is the most by any side after 33 games of an English top-flight campaign.

Manchester City (28 wins) are now just three wins away from this with five games to play.

In truth, that race was over a long time ago and it was a matter of time before City sealed the title.

Manchester City are officially Premier League champions!

Fast-forward to Sunday April 15, 2018 and Guardiola's City side has achieved a domestic double, adding the Premier League to the League Cup they won in February.

Only Manchester United (1907-08 and 2000-01) and Everton (1984-85) have ever wrapped up the title with as many games remaining, while Guardiola has also become the first Spanish coach to win the English top-flight title.

"Champions! What a great feeling!"

The result sparked celebrations among the Light Blue half of Manchester but Mourinho said City's title deserved to be recognized for its true value.

As for City, it has a month to finish a season with the most points, goals and wins in a single Premier League campaign.

Jose Mourinho has built a reputation for getting under the skin of opposition managers but the United boss was not up to his old tricks on Sunday.

Few - including Guardiola - expected it to happen on Sunday.

Former England global Gary Lineker, who now work as a television presenter, tweeted: "Congratulations to @ManCity on winning the Premier League title".

Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry on Sky Sports: They deserve to be champions, I am sure they would have liked to do it against Swansea but now they can play against Swansea with a happier smile on their face because they all know they're champions and they deserve it.
