Mecca Masjid blast verdict: Security stepped up in Hyderabad

In Mecca Masjid Blast Case Judge Who Acquitted All 5 Accused Resigns

The special NIA court announced that all the ten accused acquitted in this case.

A special anti-terror court today acquitted Hindutva preacher Swami Aseemanand and four others in the 2007 Mecca Masjid blast case, holding that the prosecution failed to prove "even a single allegation" against them, lawyers said.

The bomb blast during Friday prayers in the mosque adjacent to the historic Charminar in Hyderabad on May 18, 2007, killed nine people and injured 58 others.

The case was then taken over by the NIA in 2011 and 10 people with links to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and its sister organization were named in the case.

Those acquitted were Swami Aseemanand a.k.a. Naba Kumar Sarkar, Devendra Gupta, Lokesh Sharrma, Bharat Mohanlal Rateshwar a.k.a Bharat Bhai and Rajendra Choudhary. Two other accused - Sandeep V Dange and Ramchandra Kalsangra - are absconding while another accused Sunil Joshi had died.

Picking up clues from the unexploded bombs found inside the Masjid, the CBI found that a group of right-wing terrorists were responsible the blast.

The fourth additional metropolitan sessions-cum-special court for NIA cases concluded the trial and last week posted the case for judgement on April 16.

During the trial, over 220 witnesses were questioned and more than 400 documents were presented to the court.

March 23, 2017: Hyderabad court has granted Aseemanad bail on condition that he cannot leave Hyderabad and Secunderabad. He also allegedly admitted to playing a role in the Malegaon blasts and the Samjhauta Express blasts. This was the first time in the country that the government paid compensation to people wrongly arrested and tortured on charges of terrorism.

The SIT had picked up over 125 Muslim youths from across the Old City and interrogated them. The men were all eventually released and paid a total of Rs 70 lakh in compensation.

The court saw a heavy deployment of security personnel and all the roads leading to Nampally Court were blocked.
