Messaging App 'Telegram' Has Been Banned In Russia

Russia starts Telegram blocking process

On Friday, a Moscow court sided with the regulator, Roskomnadzor, in ordering to block Telegram in Russian Federation "immediately".

The Russian telecom watchdog, Roskomnadzor, said in a statement that it has sent internet and mobile operators a notification about blocking access to Telegram inside Russia. He also said that the agency would soon address the App Store and Google Play with official demands to make the downloading of Telegram's applications impossible in Russian Federation. Messenger's refusal to hand over its encryption keys to the FSB provoked the trial in the first place.

Telegram is popular among blockchain and cryptocurrency advocates.

In defiance of the ruling, Telegram owner and founder Pavel Valerievich Durov, who also the owns VK.com -the, he said that Telegram would attempt to by-pass the block with built-in techniques. "We consider the ban decision anti-constitutional and will continue to defend the right to secret correspondence for Russians". Other countries to have blocked the app or its services includes Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Bahrain.

Though it blocked about 78 channels operated by the terrorist group, their privacy policies were not satisfactory for the global security community.

Russian state telecommunications regulator said on Monday that the country has started to implement a nationwide ban on the secure messaging app Telegram.

The court's decision followed the legal action against Telegram that had been requested by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), which had previously asked Telegram Durov to provide the agency with encryption keys in an effort to deter terror attacks in Russia since the messenger is believed to be widely used by terrorists.
