Paul Ryan won't seek re-election - CNNPolitics

House Speaker Ryan told confidants he won't run again Axios

House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan will not run for re-election this November, raising questions about the Republicans' ability to maintain control of the House during midterm elections.

While politicians often cite their families in such announcements, the Republican from Janesville, Wis., may actually mean it.

"If I am here for one more term my kids will only have ever known me as a weekend dad".

He continued: "But the truth is it's easy for it to take over everything in your life and you can't just let that happen".

He is giving up on his caucus, his party, his president, and the job. Republicans are deeply divided, and sense a blue wave approaching in the November elections. Some say this president really doesn't want to expand the base.

McCarthy is hosting two high-dollar fundraisers with Pence in Southern California this month, following an earlier swing through the Golden State with the vice president previous year.

First elected in 1998, Ryan has never won re-election by fewer than 55 points. Others have suggested that an ideal job for the policy wonk could be running a think tank, noting the leader of the conservative American Enterprise Institute recently announced he would be stepping down.

His youthful appearance, commitment to physical fitness, and family portrait made him a poster boy for Midwestern values.

Mr Ryan, 48, is the traditional conservative who over a two-decade political career came to symbolise Republican power on Capitol Hill.

"There is nobody who's comes close to being able to raise the kind of funds I have and still can raise for this majority", Ryan said. But in his statement to reporters, he talked about spending more time with his family. We are proud of Paul and the work he has achieved over the years.

Nevertheless, he worked with the president on a massive tax cut that passed past year, succeeding also in turning back the Affordable Care Act's individual mandate to buy health insurance or pay a fee.

If Ryan has presidential ambitions, he is certainly wise to walk away now. Republicans acknowledged Wednesday morning that Ryan's seat will be far more vulnerable without the speaker on the ballot.

"He will serve out his full term, run through the tape, and then retire in January". He's a great brand for the party.

Will he use "newfound political freedom"?

In an interview Thursday, CNN reports, Ryan was pressed by CBS News host Gayle King about the photo. And while we're at it, having an effective president wouldn't hurt either.

"My guess is he'll do what he can to help his party", says Professor Green. "With Paul, this was a Republican Party they could still give to".

Neither McCarthy nor Scalise have yet declared their intentions, though both men have been jockeying behind the scenes for the top spot in the House GOP conference.

Rather, Reynolds said he expects Ryan to "keep his options open" for a re-entry into politics.

"There's a lot of weariness and a lot of exhaustion, frankly", said Rep. Charlie Dent, R-Pa., who is retiring. You know why? Because our kids aren't getting younger. But California Republicans see a silver lining: Ryan's hand-picked successor is one of their own. He went as far as to deliver the president a jar of Starburst past year with all but the pink and red sweets picked out - just as Trump likes it.
