R. Lee Ermey dies at 74

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the drill sergeant persona came naturally to Ermey because he had really served in the military, for 11 years.

Ermey was a U.S. Marine Corps sergeant in real life and then rose to his greatest acting fame portraying Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in the Stanley Kubrick film.

Ermey's longtime agent, Bill Rogin, announced on Twitter on Sunday evening that the actor has passed due to "complications of pneumonia".

Ermey's portrayal of a strict drill strict drill instructor earned him a Golden Globe nomination.

His first film role occurred when he was studying in the Philippines, and he played a First Air Cavalry chopper pilot in Apocalypse Now, also serving as a technical adviser to Francis Ford Coppola.

His performance in the film, which involved him ad-libbing many of his now-famous lines on the spot, led to him being typecast as authoritarian, commanding presence in future roles as he went on to appear as a Police Captain in David Fincher's Se7en, Mayor Tilman in Mississippi Burning and Sheriff Hoyt in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. Ermey joined the Marine Corps. and was stationed in San Diego as a drill instructor.

"He will be greatly missed by all of us..." These include Lock N' Load with R. Lee Ermey, where he talked about the development of the different types of weapons, and the History Channel show Mail Call, in which he provided his knowledge about modern and historic military issues. It is a bad loss that nobody was prepared for. He was later awarded the honorary rank of gunnery sergeant. He has also contributed many iconic and indelible characters on film that will live on forever.

Rogin says that while his characters were often hard and principled, the real Ermey was a family man and a kind and gentle soul who supported the men and women who serve. And, he especially cared deeply for others in need...

According to Kubrick, Ermey also had a bad auto accident one night in the middle of production and was out for four and half months with broken ribs. "That's what he wanted most of all".
