Russian envoy warns of 'consequences' after US-led strikes on Syria

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres

Moscow also said it was calling an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council, where it is a permanent member, to discuss the "aggressive actions" of the U.S. and its allies.

Syria ally Russian Federation has warned of "consequences" following the launch of US-led strikes against Bashar al-Assad's regime in retaliation for a suspected chemical attack.

Early on Saturday, US President Donald Trump announced the military action in Syria in response to the alleged chemical weapons attack in the city of Duma in the Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta.

All responsibility for them rests with Washington, London, and Paris.

Antov added that it was not acceptable to insult Russia's president: "Insulting the President of Russian Federation is unacceptable and inadmissible".

Foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova wrote on Facebook: "Those behind all this claim moral leadership in the world and declare they are exceptional".

Russia's Colonel General Sergei Rudskoi said at a press conference on Saturday: 'This fact of American aggression shows that United States of America is not interested in conducting an objective investigation, wishes to disrupt the process of peaceful resolution in Syria and destabilise the situation in the region and has nothing to do with the previously proclaimed goals of fighting global terrorism'. "You need to be really exceptional to shell Syria's capital at the moment when it had gained a chance of a peaceful future". Rudskoi says Saturday's strike hasn't caused any casualties and Syrian military facilities targeted by the U.S., Britain and France have suffered only minor damage.

Russia's ambassador to the USA warned that there would be consequences for the attacks early on Saturday, which came in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack in the former rebel stronghold of Douma last weekend.
