Suspected shark attack at Gracetown in Western Australia

"The World Surf League (WSL) has been alerted to a shark incident that occurred near Gracetown", a WSL spokesman said.

Alejandro Travaglini was surfing at Gracetown around 8 a.m. when he was attacked, St. John Ambulance spokesman Dennis Bertoldo said.

He was treated on the beach by paramedics before being flown 160 miles by helicopter to a hospital in Perth, where he remains in a serious but stable condition. He is being transferred to the state trauma unit where he will continue his recovery.

"There was a lot more thrashing around".

Surf photographer Peter Jovic watched the attack from the beach and likened it to the live broadcast of a shark attack in South Africa in 2015.

"I$3 saw the guy who had been attacked get separated from the [surf] board and then start to paddle for an inside wave, which he managed to body surf all the way in".

Speaking after the attack, that left bite marks to the bone on his leg, Mr Longgrass said he slapped the water in a bid to scare it off.

The World Surf League event was put on hold on Monday morning following a shark attack at Cobblestones beach, near Grace Town.

Beach closures are in place for the Gracetown area, including North Point, Big Rock and Lefthanders.

The Margaret River Pro worldwide surfing competition is being held nearby and had been taking place in Gracetown over the weekend.

After assessing the situation, organizers of the Margaret River Pro chose to resume the event with additional safety measures in place.

"The safety of our surfers and staff is a top priority for the WSL". Organizers added more drones and jet skis to ensure the safety of competitors.

"Sharks are still a threat to surfers and people in the ocean here", he told reporters.

Acting Fisheries Minister Roger Cook said his primary concern was for the two victims, but expressed concern that Mr Longgrass was in the water after the beach was closed.

"The current policies are simply not adequate".
