Suspected Toronto serial killer charged with 8th murder

Toronto police to provide update on Bruce McArthur investigation Monday

Alleged Canadian serial killer Bruce McArthur, who is accused of targeting men from Toronto's gay village, has been charged with an eighth murder, police announced on Monday. Authorities said he was allegedly murdered by McArthur sometime between September 3 and December 14, 2015.

Police were able to identify Kanagaratnam after taking what Idsinga called a "last resort" and releasing a photo where he appeared to be dead. But Idsinga confirmed last week the man may not be from Toronto, and said investigators had been following up with some worldwide agencies in relation to the photo.

Detective Sergeant Hank Idsinga of the Toronto Police Service said Kanagaratnam was born in Sri Lanka but moved to Canada in 2010. He was not on file as missing in Canada.

Kanagaratnam's remains were found buried in planters that McArthur, a landscaper, kept stored at the home of one of his clients.

Kanagratnam is the second alleged victim of McArthur's who was an immigrant from Sri Lanka.

There also apparently isn't any evidence tying Kanagaratnam to the gay community, a community which many of McArthur's alleged victims have been a part of. Six of the eight men that McArthur is charged with killing were from South Asia or the Middle East.

They identified the man on Thursday but haven't yet released the name.

The first two alleged victims were identified in January as Andrew Kinsman, 49, and Selim Esen, 44, who both went missing in 2017.

Later that month, he was charged with the murders of Majeed Kayhan, Soroush Mahmudi, and Dean Lisowick.

It remains unclear how the man was identified or where he was from.

Mr McArthur has yet to enter a plea in any of the charges.

"This doesn't quite fit the profile we have seen before...we don't know how he had contact with Bruce McArthur".

The news came weeks after police tried to calm community concerns - following a handful of disappearances in the village over a number of years - that there was a serial killer stalking the neighbourhood.

Last week, police laid a seventh murder charge and announced they were expanding the McArthur investigation to include cold case homicides as far back as 1975.

In May, investigators will begin searching up to 75 Toronto properties linked to the self-employed landscaper. But Idsinga confirmed last week the man may not be from Toronto, adding investigators had been following up with some global agencies in relation to the man's photo.
