Top city law firm linked to Chebukati got IEBC tenders

IEBC commissioners resign

IEBC commissioners Paul Kurgat, Margaret Wanjala and Vice chairperson Consolata Nkatha announce their resignations during a press conference in Nairobi, April 16, 2018.

Deputy President William Ruto has been linked to the recent infighting and resignations at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) by National Super Alliance (NASA) Chief Executive Norman Magaya.

They faulted Chebukati over how key decisions at the commission were being made, including last week sending of CEO Ezra Chiloba on a three-month compulsory leave. There are no longer good or bad commissioners at IEBC.

The three claim the IEBC under the leadership of Wafula Chebukati is dysfunctional.

In a statement seen by TUKO.co.ke, Orengo demanded the disbandment of the entire commission since it has failed accountability, efficiency and accuracy tests as stipulated in the constitution.

"The Commission Chairperson has failed to be the steady and stable hand that steers the ship in hard times and give direction when needed", Commissioner Mwachanya said flanked by Nkatha and Kurgat.

Chebukati stated that he was yet to receive the formal communication confirming the resignation of commissioners Connie Nkatha Maina, Margaret Mwachanya, and Paul Kugat. "All of which are against the laid down laws that govern the conduct of the commission leadership and staff", they added.

The commissioners' resignation leaves in office three other commissioners after Roselyn Akombe resigned in October a year ago saying she feared for her safety and that the IEBC as then constituted could not hold credible repeat elections. It was first captured by the State to rig the presidential election a year ago and then the commissioners and senior staff became greedy players in the procurement process and the business undertaken by the commission.

Even before the August 8 vote, many Kenyans, including Odinga, were querying IEBC's ability to ensure a free and fair election.

In an interesting turn of events, vocal commissioner Roselyne Akombe threw in the towel seven days to the repeat October 26 polls.
