Trump goes on Twitter rant against Comey ahead of explosive interview

Former FBI director James Comey is seen here being interviewed by ABC News. Comey spoke about the 2016 presidential election and the Hillary Clinton email probe

US President Donald Trump, his White House staff and the Republican National Committee escalated their attacks on Monday against the former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation who called Trump a "morally unfit" leader in an interview.

"The challenge of this president is that he will stain everyone around him", he told ABC, which aired an edited version of the interview but published a full transcript.

"I don't think he's medically unfit to be president".

"People in this country need to stand up and go to the voting booth and vote their values", he said.

After Clapper briefed the team on the intelligence community's findings of Russian election interference, Comey writes, he was taken aback by what the Trump team didn't ask.

Comey's comments in an ABC News interview that aired Sunday were nearly certain to escalate his war of words with the president and further erode a relationship marked by open hostility and name-calling. "Is Donald Trump unfit to be president?"

Comey could not confirm or deny any of the rumored material in the alleged dossier, but did say "it's possible" that Russian Federation has leverage over Trump. Comey added, "I don't know whether the current President of the United States was with prostitutes peeing on each other in Moscow in 2013".

So, beyond obstruction of justice, the boasts of pussy-grabbing, or even a possible pee-pee tape, Mr Comey simply believes Donald Trump's essential nature makes him unsuitable to be Commander in Chief.

Comey's firing came as the Federal Bureau of Investigation was probing possible connections between Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russia's meddling in the US election.

Comey's comments in an ABC News interview broadcast Sunday were nearly certain to escalate his war of words with the president.

Comey also revealed his belief that Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, would win the election factored into the investigation into her private email server.

In it, Comey compares Trump to a mafia don and calls his leadership of the country "ego driven and about personal loyalty".

Trump has "impressively coifed hair, "it looks to be all his", Comey said".

All rather ironic then that probably more than anyone else, James Comey made Donald Trump President of the United States.

During the interview, Comey repeated his assertion that Trump told him that he expected loyalty and pressured him to drop an investigation into Michael Flynn. Democrats, on the other hand, have accused Comey of politicizing the investigation, and Clinton herself has said it hurt her election prospects.

The assertion that Trump demanded loyalty was "another of his many lies", Trump tweeted.

In his tweet, Trump was likely referencing Sen.

"The audience could see my face change", he said.

The interview escalated the ongoing battle between Comey and the president, who just hours had tweeted that his former FBI director was "slimeball" and "the WORST FBI Director in history, by far!" But she quickly tried to clean things up, disputing ABC's headline, "Kellyanne Conway slams Comey: "This guy swung an election" as misleading on Twitter.

In his testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee previous year, Comey said he believes the President asked him to "drop any investigation of Flynn", a reference to former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
