United States to punish Russian Federation for supporting Syria

President Donald Trump addresses the nation about the U.S.-led airstrikes in Syria

Speaking on Fox News on Sunday, Haley listed three aims for the United States: ensuring that chemical weapons are not used in any way that poses a risk to USA interests, that so-called Islamic State group is defeated and that there is a good vantage point to watch what Iran is doing.

Haley also criticized Russian Federation on Fox News Sunday, accusing it of enabling the Syrian government to use chemical weapons without worrying about blowback at the United Nations.

"They will go directly to any sort of companies that were dealing with equipment related to Assad and chemical-weapons use", Haley said. I think everyone is going to feel it at this point.

France's U.N. Ambassador Francois Delattre said the result of the vote sends "a clear message" that Security Council members recognized the need for the airstrikes, and "their proportional and targeted nature".

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova confirmed that Moscow had been informed of the looming sanctions.

" It represents the will of this overwhelming majority of people to the Security Council, for example China, so over the next few weeks and days, we will be chasing this using the secretary overall and people visit the Russians to return in to the global fold and help us resolve this battle", she clarified Sunday.

"We are prepared to sustain this pressure, if the Syrian regime is foolish enough to test our will", she said.

Oil prices fell, however, as geopolitical tensions were somewhat eased by signs that there would be no significant retaliation in response to a US-led air strike on Syria over the weekend.

She said the three U.S. goals for accomplishing its mission are making sure chemical weapons are not used in a way that could harm USA national interests, defeating the Islamic State group and having a good vantage point to watch what Iran is doing.

Air strikes by the allies on Saturday hit three targets that Western officials said were linked to chemical weapons development in the Damascus and Homs areas.

Putin has spoken by phone with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, and they agreed the Western airstrikes were an "illegal action. adversely impacting prospects for political settlement in Syria", a Kremlin statement said.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who delayed a trip to Saudi Arabia to deal with the Syria crisis, said he had asked special envoy Staffan de Mistura to return to NY as soon as possible to chart a way forward.

Syria, however, is interpreting the airstrikes as a victory for Assad, arguing that the limited scope of the strikes suggests that Western powers do not intend to challenge his rule.

"And what's most important is no one contests that the use of chemical weapons can not be tolerated and must be deterred", he said.
