Air defense confront missiles in Homs

The Russian Defense MInistry

The United States a year ago targeted the Shayrat airbase with cruise missiles in response to a sarin gas attack on the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhun.

Syrian state-run television says missiles targeted Shayrat air base in Homs province and another base northeast of the capital, Damascus.

Iranian news agencies also reported missiles being fired toward Shayrat.

The U.S., Britain and France targeted military and research sites in Syria after the purported toxic attack on Eastern Ghouta's last moderate opposition holdout of Douma a week earlier.

Moscow and Damascus claimed two Israeli fighter planes carried out that airstrike "remotely from Lebanese territory".

Israel's main concern in Syria is the growing influence of Iran, which it says supplies weapons to Hezbollah from inside the country.

Saturday's strike: The US, France and the United Kingdom launched airstrikes against Syrian government targets on Saturday in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack by the government on civilians in Douma city near Damascus.

Before the US -led attack, Israeli warplanes had fired missiles on the T-4 airbase in the eastern countryside of Homs on April 9, killing 14 soldiers, including Iranian fighters.

The same airbase was hit by a USA missile strike in April, 2017 over allegations of chemical weapons' use by the Syrian army in Idlib province in the same year.

An Israeli military spokesman said: "We don't comment on such reports".

Israel has struck Syrian army locations many times in the course of the conflict, hitting convoys and bases of Iranian-backed militias that fight alongside Syrian President Bashar al Assad's forces.
