Apple expected to launch news subscriptions by early 2019

Apple-acquires-Texture-03122018

According to the report, the company will integrate Texture, a magazine subscription service that was recently acquired by the tech giant, into its existing News app and offer it as a standalone service you pay monthly for.

Texture lets users subscribe to more than 200 magazines for Dollars 9.99 a month.

The Bloomberg report also notes that Apple laid off about 20 Texture staffers soon after the acquisition in March. The remaining ones are now being integrated into the Apple News team. Apple may take the same approach as it's looking to allow users to subscribe to its own premium news subscription service from within an upgraded Apple News app. Exactly what that ratio will be has not yet been revealed.

Apple's music subscription service, Apple Music, has successfully scaled an improved version of the Beats Music service from under 1 million to over 40 million subscribers in a matter of years. Executives have said they're targeting services revenue of roughly $50 billion by 2021.

Which makes sense when you think about it. Apple already makes a decent slice of cash by selling music and video on iTunes, alongside subscriptions for Apple Music, so it makes sense that it would want to expand that to other areas.

Apple will likely carefully curate the partner organizations for its news service.

Apple announced plans to purchase Texture last month. Texture had about 100 staff. "We want the best articles, we want them to look incredible, and we want them to be from trusted sources.so we don't have a lot of the issues going around", Cue said, likely alluding to the issues that Facebook and Google have had to deal with surrounding unverified news stories populating users' feeds. Still, it's unclear how Apple News will display magazine content, specifically whether articles will be shown in their PDF-like downloadable forms or forced to adapt to News's web-like scrollable and dynamically reformattable interface.
