Assad supporters rally in Damascus after Western strikes

"When it comes to this use of chemical weapons, it is clear to Canada that chemical weapons were used and that they were used by the Assad regime", Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said Friday.

"Last night, operations were very successful", Pentagon spokesperson Dana White said at a briefing Saturday morning.

"This was not geared towards weakening Assad's conventional military capabilities", said Kamran Bokhari, a senior fellow with the Center for Global Policy in Washington. Macron insisted in an interview Sunday that France had "not declared war" on Syria, striving to underscore Paris' justification for the attacks. They also called the attack an impediment to peace.

"We have seen as a pattern in the world today is actors who behave in a reprehensible manner, then can be quite clever in trying to muddy the waters and in trying to dodge responsibility", she added.

Eyewitnesses reported multiple government helicopters over Douma on April 7th, and said barrel bombs were dropped from those helicopters, the officials said.

We salute the courage, heroism and sacrifices of the [Assad's] Syrian Arab Army which courageously protects Syria and provide security for its people.

In Germany, the president warned against a "dangerous alienation" from Russian Federation, as tensions grow between the country and the West.

President Bashar al-Assad's government said on Monday it was ready to cooperate and facilitate the work of the OPCW team, but did not say when they would go to the site.

Russian Federation denounced the attacks as aggression against its ally, but there was no sign of an immediate military response.

"The worst apprehensions have come true". For now, it doesn't appear that Russian Federation is heeding the call by U.S. State Department Press Secretary Heather Nauert who said that Russian Federation "needs to take responsibility".

From Moscow, President Vladimir Putin denounced the operation as "an act of aggression" but officials also noted that no Russian military assets had been threatened.

Putin condemned Saturday's strikes as an "act of aggression" that will worsen the humanitarian catastrophe in Syria and have a "destructive influence on the entire system of worldwide relations".

The strikes appeared to have taken place far from Russia's bases near the Syrian coast.

Mr Putin warned about potential "chaos" in a phone conversation with Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson told the BBC the primary objective of the attack was to "say no to the use of barbaric chemical weapons".

French authorities said the allies don't seek any military escalation, nor confrontation with Russian Federation.

"The regime of Bashar Assad has an enemy who is his people", Macron said. "We can't allow even the smallest use of chemical weapons". It concluded in 2016 that Syrian government forces had several times used chlorine as a chemical weapons, and in 2017 it blamed Assad's government for a sarin attack.

But the U.S. envoy to the global watchdog said on Monday Russia may have tampered with the site of the incident on April 7 in Douma outside of Damascus.

May will address Parliament - where she doesn't have a majority - next week.

Next week, he is to become the first foreign leader to be hosted by Donald Trump on a state visit.

French President Emmanuel Macron says France wants to launch a diplomatic initiative over Syria that would include Western powers, Russian Federation and Turkey.
