Conway questions Comey's credibility over Trump meeting claims

Trump, meanwhile, tweeted a slew of insults at Comey, whom he fired in May.

Conway reversed her argument later Monday morning, arguing that Comey wasn't capable of swinging an election. She also said Comey's handling of the Hillary Clinton's email probe late in the campaign likely crippled her White House bid at a time she was leading in the polls.

In an explosive TV interview ahead of the release of his book, Mr Comey offered his version of events surrounding his sacking last May and the investigations into Russian election meddling.

"This guy swung an election", she told George Stephanopoulos.

Remember, too, that when Trump first fired Comey in 2017, one of the White House's initial defenses of the firing was because of how Comey mishandled the Clinton investigation, though Trump himself would later admit the Russian Federation investigation played a role.

Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, asked Comey if he had ever "been an anonymous source in news reports about matters relating to the Trump investigation or the Clinton investigation?" or if he had ever "authorized someone else at the FBI to be an anonymous source in news reports about the Trump investigation or the Clinton investigation?"

As director of the FBI, James Comey was in office from January 20, 2017, to May 9, 2017.

Hours before the interview was shown, the president, who sacked Mr Comey previous year, unleashed a Twitter outburst that labelled him "slippery", suggested he should be put in jail and branded him "the WORST FBI Director in history, by far!"

In the interview that aired Sunday, Comey said that he would not favor impeaching Trump to remove him from office, because that "would let the American people off the hook and have something happen indirectly that I believe they're duty-bound to do directly" - meaning through elections.

As excerpts of the book "A Higher Truth" were given to the media, it quickly triggered a rage within Donald Trump, who then vented his frustrations on Twitter, with the president referring to Comey as a "leaker", a "liar", and a "slimeball".

Comey just loves "being in the proximity of power", Conway shot back.
