Giant asteroid 2018 GE3 makes a surprise flyby past Earth on weekend

Эксперт дал прогноз нового сценария апокалипсиса на Земле

First observed at Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona on Saturday, April 14, 2018, the asteroid - which has been labeled 2018 GE3 - swept past us at about half the Earth-moon distance early Sunday morning according to clocks in North America.

Now recently NASA had released a chart of NEOs that are in a position to pass the earth in future using the CNEOs software.

According to NASA, it posted on its website that it is nothing as compared to asteroids which are present in between the Mars and Jupiter, whose length can spread across 580 miles. Those asteroids, however, pose no threat to Earth.

Had the object, first observed at the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona on Saturday, moving at a speed of some 66,174 miles per hour (106,497 km/h), hit the Earth, its impact would be hard to imagine.

'Hours later, amateur astronomer Michael Jäger of Weißenkirchen Austria video-recorded the space rock gliding through the southern constellation Serpens'.

The asteroid which flies past by Earth on Sunday was about six times the size of the meteor that was exploded over Russia's Ural Mountains in Chelyabinsk in the month of February during the year 2013.

The Chelyabinsk asteroid was undetected before it entered the atmosphere.

"It doesn't take a very large object".

NASA tracks asteroids that make close approaches to Earth, providing data on the distance and estimated diameter of each object.

With an estimated diameter of 157 to 361 feet (48 to 110 meters), the asteroid's impact with the Earth could have caused substantial damage.

"An asteroid this big is capable of causing some regional damage, depending on various factors such as composition, speed, entry angle, and location of impact".

That's significantly smaller than the 2018 GE3 asteroid. "2018 GE3 was found less than a day before its closest approach", said the report.
