Google introducing Snapchat-style self-destructing messages in Gmail

Gmail accounts to get new Confidential Mode, and it could change how you use email

"Google will also let Gmail users require a passcode to open emails, which will be generated via SMS, or set an expiration date on sent emails", The Verge reported. Don't worry, your smartphone or laptop will not explode 30 seconds after opening an email, but it looks like they're now testing a feature similar to the expiring email of ProtonMail.

Google is revamping the web version of its popular email service, Gmail. This feature is already available for people who use the Inbox by Gmail app or Boomerang, a third-party Gmail tool.

The more you use Smart Reply the smarter it gets, learning how you are likely to reply to an email, enabling you to replay with just a single click.

There's now no word on a final release date for the new Gmail, however, a message to early access testers hints at a launch date in the coming weeks. The user has a web client as well as apps for android and iOS.

When a user composes a new email, there will be a small icon called Confidential Mode.

Google is implementing smart replies for Gmail on the web, the same feature from mobile Gmail that provides suggestions to quickly reply to emails. Snooze can be a godsend if you get a lot of emails, receive one when you don't have time to answer, and forget about it when the incoming flood pushes it off your screen. The redesign might also include the option to snooze emails so they later appear in the inbox. The report says that Gmail will also be getting the ability to self-destruct an email. An email can be locked which prevents the recipient from copying, forwarding, downloading or printing it. Emails can also be tagged and eliminated from both the recipient's inbox and the sender's sent list after a specified time period. It will give you the option to put a time limit onto an email that you send and after it expires, it will be rendered unreadable. The default layout highlights details and attachments, comfort keeps highlights hidden, and compact is comparable to the current Gmail design. Notably, it looks like recipients of the confidential email will have to log into their Google accounts once again to read the email.
