India finish third best CWG show with 66 medals in Gold Coast

England women rugby sevens

"You have to look at the Olympic Games as the pinnacle of athletic achievement, and many the athletes that are going for gold and going for the podium use these Games to measure and help them prepare for the Olympics". "To be perfectly honest, Jo, so have we". In hockey, both the men's and women's team failed to live upto expectations by not making it to the podium.

Nearly every medal that is there to be taken is in her kitty but M C Mary Kom says she still trains like a maniac, the latest result of the regimen being a gold on debut at the Commonwealth Games here.

"Did we stuff it up? Yes".

In fact, viewers didn't really see any athletes in the broadcast of the closing ceremony, and they were pretty mad about it. We got that wrong.

India's highest-ever haul came at home when it hosted the Games in 2010 in New Delhi, with the Indian athletes crossing the century mark. I've got to say it's about the only thing they got wrong. "Again, we got that wrong".

Athletes themselves have said they were disappointed to not be included in the closing ceremony.

"We have a disability, we are different but we are athletes".

The support for Para-athletes from the Gold Coast crowds has been vocal and wheelchair-bound local Kurt Fearnley said the backing he received winning silver in the wheelchair 1,500m "almost blew my head off". He also said he wasn't interested in blaming anyone else for the mistake. I'm still sad that a wonderful Commonwealth Games has been tarnished with such a sad ending.

Standing in front of an already empty stadium, Griggs and Zempilas wasted no time tearing strips off the two-and-a-half hour ceremony, labelling it "disappointing".

"Our decision to bring them in early was right, but what we should have done though is have them parade as well".

She added: "When you start to see the athletes that have come here and the standard that they are, we can compete with anyone anywhere".

"Wake up, we're all in this together", she said, asked about the importance of having an equal number of medals.

"I was one of hundreds of dancers and we had the most exhilarating experience and I'm gutted that Australia missed out on it", she said.

Griggs was congratulated for her on-air condemnation of the closing ceremony in which she displayed her anger that the broadcast didn't celebrate the athletes. "I'm happy to win, I just did my best".

Johanna Griggs and Basil Zempilas were left underwhelmed by the Closing Ceremony.

"Back in the day of Sydney 2000, Dick Ebersol of the NBC network was able to overturn the host city agreement and the IOC Charter by insisting that the athletes not be permitted to be in the stadium watching the ceremony prior to the Parade of Athletes".

Taking to Twitter, Beattie also admitted several of the speeches presented at the ceremony were needlessly long.
