Last missing California family member found dead

Search teams have recovered the last member of a Southern California family of four who went missing more than a week ago while driving home from OR, officials said.

Authorities searching for a family whose SUV plunged into a rain-swollen Northern California river have found the vehicle and the body of a man and a girl inside it.

That day they also found two bodies inside the vehicle, identified as those of 41-year old Sandeep Thottapilly, and his 9-year-old daughter, Saachi.

According to a report from the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office, the Sunday search consisted of 21 water searchers which included two Jet Ski teams, two boat teams and several Kayak/Carlson board teams.

Siddhant Thottapilly was the last to be found after the family of four went missing earlier this month.

The Thottapillys' vehicle was completely submerged under heavy water, said Bartley, noting that intense rains had soaked the river, which was moving very swiftly. Autopsies are expected to be performed this week as part of the Coroner's investigation into the incident.

The force of the river caused a lot of damage to the vehicle and windows to break, said Bartley, theorizing that Soumya Thottapilly was likely shaken loose from the force of the water, and floated away in the rapid river. On Sunday almost 70 jet skis, boats were involved in the search operation. They soon found the vehicle, and divers reported feeling what they believed to be a person inside. A tow truck then removed the vehicle, which was encased in a large amount of sediment.

The family was believed to be vacationing when they were reported missing last week.

"Several items have been positively identified, by family members, as belonging to the Thottapilly family", it said.

Before the family was known to be missing, authorities in Mendocino County received reports that a vehicle southbound on USA 101 went off the highway and tumbled into the Eel River. Five bodies were found March 26 near Mendocino, a few days after Washington state authorities began investigating the Harts for possible child neglect, but three of their children were not immediately recovered from the scene along the shoreline.
