Mainz and Freiburg players called back to pitch after VAR-awarded penalty

Mainz VAR penalty madness

One goal defined this relegation six-pointer between Mainz and Freiburg on Monday night, and it was an odd one to say the least.

Mainz 05 and Freiburg's players are forced to cut their half-time interval short after VAR awards a penalty during the break.

The video assistant referee (VAR) system came under fresh scrutiny last night when a team had to be summoned back from the dressing room at half-time to face a penalty.

Mainz initially had the penalty appeal turned down after right-back Daniel Brosinski's cross deflected off Freiburg centre-back Marc-Oliver Kempf's hand and was saved by keeper Alexander Schwolow.

De Blasis added a second with ten minutes remaining, but there is likely to be significant fallout from this match (and that decision in particular) in the coming days.

There was a further 10-minute delay before the start of the second half as fans threw hundreds of toilet rolls onto the pitch in a protest against Monday evening matches.

Winkmann overturned the decision and awarded the hosts a penalty before having to recall the entire Freiburg side and the handful of Mainz players who had left the pitch.

Protests also delayed the initial kickoff, and the whole game took place to the sound of shrill whistles as supporters made their displeasure known with the Bundesliga.

Pablo De Blasis kept his cool from 12 yards to give Mainz the lead.

The ref maybe shouldn't have sent them off as quickly, it depends on how quickly VAR contacted him.

This is the latest VAR-related controversy in a long line of decisions involving the technology.
