Scientists Research Human Sitting Too Much could affect the Brain Memory

Sitting for too long may increase dementia risk Study

They plan to survey people who sit for longer periods of time daily, in order to establish a cause-and-effect relationship.

It may be time to ditch the desk chair: A new study links sitting too much each day with memory problems in middle-age and older adults, Live Science reports. Researchers added that thin medial temporal lobes could be considered as a precursor to cognitive decline.

A lot of us need to do a lot of sitting as part of our jobs, and it's not uncommon for today's people, in general, to sit down for long periods of time.

The scientists from Curtin University in Australia conducted a research and found that people who sit for 2 hours at a stretch while they are at work at their workplace or at home, experience discomfort along with mental illness. The current study was led by Prabha Siddarth of the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA.

A new study found that people who suffer brain injuries are at increased risk of dementia later in life.

They answered questions about their physical activity levels and the average number of hours per day they spent sitting over the previous week. Then the team scanned the participants' brains using an advanced MRI to get detailed scans of the temporal lobes.

In addition, thefindings are preliminary, and although the studyfocused on hours spent sitting, it did not take into consideration whether participants took breaks during long stretches of sedentary behavior.

"Sedentary behavior is a significant predictor of thinning of the [medial temporal lobe] and that physical activity, even at high levels, is insufficient to offset the harmful effects of sitting for extended periods", the researchers said.

The conclusions for this study are pretty striking, but it's also worth noting that we're pretty early in the medical research for this.

In the future, researchers are aiming to find out whether sitting actually causes brain thinning and what role gender, race and weight might play in brain health in relation to sitting.

The subjects reported different average sitting times, with some averaging as low as three hours a day, and others averaging as much as 15 hours.

The study was supported by grants from various funders including the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Energy and the McLoughlin Cognitive Health Gift Fund.
