Use Of Force Investigation Underway After Naked Man Punched During Arrest

A bystander's video shows four officers struggling with Ohene who was believed to be high on hallucinogenic drugs

The video shows the man, who police identified as 21-year-old Selorm Ohene, standing in the middle of a traffic median, surrounded by officers.

Police said they told Ohene they were "only there to help him and were concerned for his safety;" however, he became "aggressive, hostile, and intimidating" and approached officers with clenched fists, prompting them to take him to the ground, the report continued. The primary concern I've addressed this morning focuses on punches (five in total) issued by one of the involved officers after the suspect was on the ground.

"The video speaks for itself", the lawyers said.

A statement from the Criminal Justice Institute of Harvard Law School released Tuesday said that the Harvard student was still recovering from his injuries from the incident.

With two different stories coming from police and witnesses, a spokesman for Cambridge police said in an email Sunday that the department is committed to a "thorough and complete" review. "Three officers from the Cambridge Police Department and another officer from the Transit Police Department were required to gain compliance with the male".

The student group's description said "While on the ground, at least one officer repeatedly punched the student in his torso as he screamed for help".

Then, Ohene appears to reach toward an officer and another takes him down to the ground.

He asked the public to analyze the officers' actions "in the context of a rapidly evolving situation" and added: "I absolutely do support the officers".

Bard explained that after Ohene was brought down, he "contorted his body" in a way that pinned his arms beneath his body, thus making it impossible for the officers to handcuff him. He said the officers "engaged" with the student for "minutes" before tackling him.

Ohene's lawyers said in a statement that the incident "continues to be a trying ordeal for Selorm and for his family".

The mayor of Cambridge said an investigation of the video will take place and the findings will be shared with the public. "If anyone's ever had to constrain an individual against their will, they'll know that it's a very hard thing to do".

Bard said at the press conference he is unsure whether the blood on the ground stemmed from injuries the student suffered during the altercation.

"What is shown in the video is disturbing". The officers held him to the ground until paramedics arrived, placed him on a stretcher, and put him in the ambulance. Ohene's behavior became aggressive, unreceptive, and intimidating nearly immediately.

"A pool of blood remained on the pavement as the ambulance departed", according to the Black Law Students Association.

Harvard's president, Drew Faust, said Monday that while she did not yet know all the facts, the incident was "profoundly disturbing", especially as it occurred against "the backdrop of increasingly urgent questions about race and policing in the United States".

"We will be asking questions of ourselves, recognizing that the responsibility rests with the University to establish the conditions of trust necessary for effective campus policing and the delivery and coordination of effective health care", Faust said. "In most cases, the extensive training of our officers go through results in the de-escalation of unsafe situations", McGovern said in a statement.

"Cambridge affirms that Black Lives Matter, but it must be true in practice as well", McGovern said in a statement.

McGovern went on to claim that policing in Cambridge "is far ahead of many communities across the country" and vowed that "as mayor, I will work with my colleagues to make sure that the horrific treatment of black Americans at the hands of law enforcement has no place in Cambridge".
