Wetherspoons deletes all social media accounts after constant 'online abuse'

JD Wetherspoon is closing down its Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts for all its 900 pubs and head office with immediate effect following the trolling of MPs and others the company has announced

JD Wetherspoon-a chain with 900 pubs in the United Kingdom and Ireland- announced it's closing down its Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts for all its pubs and head office with "immediate effect".

The company has nearly 900 pubs in the United Kingdom and Ireland, many of which have individual social media accounts associated with them.

Tim Martin, the chairman of Wetherspoon, said: "We are going against conventional wisdom that these platforms are a vital component of a successful business".

"In a world of social media, J D Wetherspoon has chose to close down all Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media accounts for individual pubs and head office", the JD Wetherspoon Twitter account posted before it was shut down; the irony seemingly lost on the pub brand. He said that he does not believe that closing the accounts will have any affect on the business "whatsoever".

For your fix of Spoons-related news, you can subscribe to its magazine... or download the Wetherspoon app, which will still keep you glued to your phone, just not Facebook.

Wetherspoon had amassed a following of some 44,000 on Twitter and over 100,000 on Facebook. Its most popular posts have received more than 500,000 views.

They also said that the closures were due to concerns regarding the misuse of personal data, especially following the ongoing Facebook scandal, as well as the addictive nature of social media. While there was no specific case which angered the Wetherspoon boss, he said he became increasingly concerned after reading reports of MPs being targeted for online abuse.
