Missiles and confrontations may thwart Yemen peace — United Nations envoy

Griffiths cited the increased missile launches, intensified military operations in northwest Saada governorate, ongoing air strikes and movements of forces in the Hodeidah region as worrisome developments.

Saudi Arabia on Tuesday announced it has successfully intercepted a ballistic missile launched by the Iranian-backed Houthi militias from inside Yemeni territories.

A Saudi-led coalition battling Yemen's Huthi rebels warned them Monday of a "painful" response if they mounted new attacks on Saudi Arabia using what it said were Iran-supplied drones.

Al-Maliki repeated previous statements accusing Iran of providing missile components to the Houthis.

The kingdom suffered its first casualty from a missile attack last month, when an Egyptian resident of Riyadh was hit by debris from three missiles targeting the capital as part of a wider attack also aimed at the southern Saudi cities of Najran, Jizan and Khamis Mushait.

Tehran has repeatedly denied arming the rebels, which would violate a United Nations weapons embargo slapped on Yemen in 2015.

United Nations humanitarian chief Mark Lowcock said Yemen remains "the world's worst humanitarian crisis" with three-quarters of the population —over 22 million people — urgently needing humanitarian help.

More than 9,200 people have been killed since the Saudi-led alliance joined the Yemen war, according to the World Health Organization.
