Amazon Prime service tops 100 million paid subscribers

Amazon’s Jeff Bezos the world’s richest person reported total compensation of $1.68 million last year

Bezos has always been a little cagey about sharing Amazon statistics. Prime members are the core drivers of the company's e-commerce growth.

Amazon revealed it has exceeded 100 million paid Prime subscribers, the first time the internet giant has provided a figure for users of the service, laying out just how dominant Amazon is in the retail sector. Customers bought tens of millions of Echo devices, and Echo Dot and Fire TV Sticks with Alexa, making them the best-selling products across all of the company.

Amazon offers Prime service in cities in nine countries.

Prime members pay $99 a year, or $49 for students, to receive free, expedited shipping on more than 100 million items.

The typical Amazon.com Inc. employee makes less than $30,000 a year, the company disclosed Wednesday.

(NASDAQ:AMZN) has put a number to its Prime subscribership for the first time, and it's now over 100M members.

Bezos talked about Amazon's expanded its slate of programming in 2017, with its launch of new seasons of Bosch and Sneaky Pete from the U.S., The Grand Tour in the United Kingdom and You Are Wanted in Germany.

"In 2017 Amazon shipped more than five billion items with Prime worldwide, and more new members joined Prime than in any previous year - both worldwide and in the USA", he writes. Having "high standards" is the key, he wrote.
