James Comey: Trump's Comment May Be Obstruction Of Justice

Anchor George Stephanopoulos sits down with former FBI director James Comey for an exclusive interview that will air during a primetime 20/20 special on Sunday

During an interview with George Stephanopoulos for ABC's 20/20 that aired Sunday night, Comey said that Trump did not possess the tools necessary to fulfill his duty as president. The interview Comey did comes on the heels of a new book.

Trump's campaign issued a fundraising appeal Tuesday that branded Comey as a "grandstanding liar who put his own interests above America's". But, most importantly, the president of the United States is calling for the imprisonment of a private citizen, as he's done for a whole lot of people who criticize him.

"People in this country need to stand up and go to the voting booth and vote their values", he said. He compared the President to a mafia boss. "If we lose that, we've lost the rule of law". This President is not able to do that. Comey was promoting his new book, "A Higher Loyalty", which was to be published Tuesday.

And the stakes were high.

Comey had testified before Congress that his decision to make the public announcement in July 2016 - something that rarely happens when investigators decide not to pursue charges - came because of political pressure he said he felt from Attorney General Loretta Lynch to downplay the investigation. The president and his allies of the Republican National Committee have been on the attack the last few days, insisting that Comey broke Federal Bureau of Investigation protocol when he was director, that he was politically motivated and is lying about his private meetings with Trump. Just another of his many lies. "And he had an opportunity to call Trump out and he didn't", another voter said. It was Comey's first televised interview since the President fired him past year. "Impeachment, in a way, would short-circuit that".

The late-night comedian kicked off the interview by jokingly asking Comey to pledge his loyalty to him, in reference to when Comey said President Donald Trump had asked for his loyalty previous year. He said Mr Trump struck him as a person of "above average intelligence".

"Contributing to this problem, regrettably, was President Obama". Comey said that he couldn't think of anything to say in response to the president at first. "Lady Justice can't be peeking under the blindfold to see if Donald Trump wants her to convict so-and-so and not convict so-and-so".

"I don't think he's medically unfit to be president". I don't think it helps the country.

When Colbert asked Comey if it's possible for Trump to turn that image around, Comey said "I wouldn't be optimistic".

"The challenge of this president is that he will stain everyone around him".

Mr Comey's televised remarks, coupled with the release of his forthcoming book, offer his version of events surrounding his sacking and the investigations into Russian election meddling and Hillary Clinton's email practices.

Trump provided no evidence of a crime and Comey has not been accused of wrongdoing by legal authorities. He said his belief that Clinton would win the 2016 election was probably a factor in his decision to talk about the investigation.

"I thought, I'm leading the Russian Federation investigation".

"So what kind of marriage to what kind of man does your wife think there's only a 99 per cent chance you didn't do that?"
