De Niro Labels Reporters 'Our Saviors' During Rant About 'Madman' Trump

Robert De Niro Urges People to Speak Up Against President Donald Trump

Over 96 feature films will premiere at the festival while Schindler's List, Scarface and In the Soup will celebrate anniversaries. The actor, who helped start the festival 16 years ago, praised journalists the crowd of journalists at the event and took shots at the commander-in-chief.

And this: "When [Trump] doesn't like what he hears, he dismisses it by saying it's un-American and damning it as 'fake news.' But we know the truth".

The 17th edition of the Tribeca Film Festival kicked off with a tribute to 1970s NY with "Love, Gilda", a documentary about the trailblazing "Saturday Night Live" star Gilda Radner. "All thinking people do know the truth".

"I think one of the things that this film does and certainly what Gilda did is that she could laugh in the face of adversity", Rosenthal said, adding "that's what as New Yorkers, as global citizens, as women we need to do so its great to be able to do that with Gilda".

Asked Wednesday on "The Today Show" if De Niro planned on making the "SNL" character a recurring role, he replied, "I hope there's a couple where I interrogate him, then I arrest him, and then I escort him to jail". The press has done an admirable job this past year.

At a kickoff luncheon for press, De Niro referred to Trump as "our Lowlife-in-Chief" and rejected what he referred to as the president's narrow definition of America. "We're looking at journalists as our saviors in the same way we used to look at our political leaders", he said. "That we welcome cultures foreign to us, that we embrace diversity, that we'll continue to support telling their stories, because ultimately, they're our stories".

One of those movies is called "The Fourth Estate" by documentary film director Liz Garbus that looks "at how The New York Times covered President Trump's first year in office".

"That's about, basically, certain writers in the New York Times and about how they deal on a daily basis with stories", De Niro said. "That story took place almost 50 years ago, but there are many parallels today, obviously. It's The Emperor's New Clothes: The guy is a fucking fool".

Just last week, as he geared up for the 2018 edition of Tribeca Film Festival, he spoke with IndieWire about his continued ire with the president.
