Meet Daisy: the Apple robot that takes apart your dead iPhone

Apple has unveiled a new robot called Daisy that can efficiently disassemble iPhones to recover valuable materials. The company introduced its first such machine in 2016, a massive robot named Liam.

Daisy is made from some of Liam's parts and is capable of disassembling nine versions of iPhone and sorting their high-quality components for recycling. Daisy, though, is a tad more efficient as it can dismantle 200 iPhones per hour, a figure which roughly translates to a tad more than 1.75 million devices per year. For every device that the customers turn in or trade from now until April 30th, the company will make a donation to Conservation global - an environmental nonprofit that is taking significant strides to help protect the environment from their home base in Virginia.

As part of the Earth Day promo, Apple is donating to the non-profit Conservation International everytime someone brings in an old iPhone to the Apple store for recycling. Customers will still get credit for use at the Apple Store for eligible trade-ins.

At Apple, we're constantly working toward smart solutions to address climate change and conserve our planet's precious resources. "We're also thrilled to introduce Daisy to the world, as she represents what's possible when innovation and conservation meet".

In response to the report, Greenpeace released a statement suggesting that Apple's focus should be on product longevity rather than recycling robots.

Indeed, earlier this month the tech giant announced that they now power 100 percent of their business operations with renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.

"We're committed to leaving the world better than we found it", said Apple in their announcements.

Along with Daisy, Apple's also using the occasion to announce GiveBack, an addition to its recycling program.
