Twitter banned Kaspersky Lab from advertising since Jan

Kaspersky Security Analyst Summit 2018- Conference Day One

The owner of the cyber-security company responded to this ban in his blog post and insisted Twitter reconsider its ban.

Given that more than two months had passed since then, Eugene said he had chose to "publicly ask that you, dear Twitter executives, kindly be specific as to the reasoning behind this ban; fully explain the decision to switch off our advertising capability, and to reveal what other cyber security companies need to do in order to avoid similar situations".

The decision to ban the cybersecurity firm "is based on our determination that Kaspersky Lab operates using a business model that inherently conflicts with acceptable Twitter Ads business practices", Twitter said in its statement referring to a Department of Homeland Security notice on Kaspersky Lab that talked about the ties between Kaspersky officials and Russian intelligence agencies.

In an email to Gizmodo, Twitter cited a Homeland Security notice about Kaspersky Labs, which states that the U.S. government remains concerned about ties it has alleged between "certain Kaspersky officials and Russian intelligence and other government agencies", as well as requirements under Russian law that "allow Russia intelligence agencies to compel assistance from Kaspersky and to intercept communications transiting Russian networks". In the post, Kaspersky complained that an unnamed Twitter employee had cited Kaspersky's business model in a letter to justify the ban, but had provided no specifics about how Kaspersky was in violation of Twitter's rules.

It has always been claimed by USA agencies that Kaspersky Lab has close links to Moscow's intelligence agencies and that its software might actually aid Russia's spying efforts.

Twitter subsequently told Reuters that its decision was also influenced by a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) assessment that Kaspersky Lab products may pose a national security threat.

However, Twitter is a private company, not an extension of the U.S. government, which means the company's decision to block Kaspersky from advertising is likely to draw criticism. Though I thought my company stood on the periphery of this social media storm, it turns out I was quite mistaken.

Eugene Kaspersky, Russian antivirus programs developer and chief executive of Russia's Kaspersky Lab, at his company's headquarters in Moscow, Russia.

In the meantime, Kaspersky says it will be making the best of the situation by converting its Twitter advertising budget to a charitable donation to the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF).

The Kaspersky Lab founder said that more than two months have passed and the only reply he received from Twitter was the copy of the same boilerplate text.

In the past it has also banned ads from Kremlin-backed Russian media outlets Russia Today and Sputnik.

He continued: "In my view, the ban itself contradicts Twitter's declared-as-adopted principle of freedom of expression".
