Eagles' Owner Rips Into Donald Trump As Team Considers Visiting White House

5 teams most likely to trade up during 2018 draft

"We are honored to receive this invitation and view this not only as an opportunity to be recognized for our achievements, but also as an opportunity to engage in productive dialogue with the leaders of our country".

Jenkins told PennLive in February he didn't see the value in talking with Trump or White House staffers at a Super Bowl event, because they wouldn't have time for a constructive conversation.

Notably, the statement claims that the Eagles have received - not accepted - the invitation.

"We have been in contact with White House representatives and are now discussing the logistics of an upcoming visit to Washington", a spokesman for the Eagles said on Monday, acknowledging publicly for the first time that the team had been invited.

You might have noticed that April 19 has come and gone this year and there hasn't been much talk of the Super Bowl champion Eagles visiting the relatively new home of President Donald Trump. When asked about the possible trip last month at the annual league meetings, Eagles owner Jeff Lurie didn't seem very eager to speak about the topic.

Meanwhile, the Eagles would be the first team to visit since Trump's attacks on the league during last season.

The idea that the visit to the White House could be an opportunity for dialogue is an interesting one.

According to reports, the White House and the Eagles are working on the details of a potential Super Bowl visit, but that was before Lurie's comments, from last year's anthem-protest meetings, were published.

A new report suggests that President Trump has been using his personal cell phone more often recently, apparently in part due to Chief of Staff John Kelly. Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins and wide receiver Torrey Smith also reportedly said they would not visit with the president.

"Another fact I want to throw out there: Many of us have no interest in supporting President Trump", Lurie said during an October meeting with owners, players and league executives, according to a recording obtained by the Times.

Mr. Lurie openly supported Mr. Jenkins and other players who have protested, though he encouraged them to hone their message and not be sidetracked by people accusing them of being unpatriotic.

That was minor compared to him referring to kneeling football players as "sons of bitches" during a rally in Alabama in late 2017 that prompted thousands of protests that following Sunday in response.
