Kentucky K-12 students required to have Hepatitis A vaccine

Health officials in IN say that they usually see less than 20 hepatitis cases each year, but 77 have been confirmed in 2018 alone "many of which are related to an outbreak in southern in".

The Department of Health says significant outbreaks of the liver-damaging hepatitis A virus have been reported in Kentucky and MI.

Since 2014, IN has required children to be immunized against hepatitis A prior to entering school. In Michigan, there have been 800 cases and 25 deaths from the virus this year.

Though Indiana is advising people to get vaccinated, the state of MI is not going as far.

The requirement stems from a recent outbreak of Hepatitis A, a highly contagious virus that can affect the liver.

In Michigan, most of the cases have been reported in southeast Michigan with the city of Detroit, and Macomb, Wayne and Oakland Counties accounting for 636 of the 815 known cases.

Hepatitis A cases have also increased in Ingham County.

According to the CDC, California and Utah are also experiencing Hepatitis A outbreaks.

If you believe you have been exposed to hepatitis A or are homeless, use injection or non-injection drugs, jail exposure, or had contact with someone who has hepatitis A, contact your health care provider about hepatitis A vaccine. They do want to encourage you to take easy steps to prevent from contracting the virus, including washing hands thoroughly, especially after using the bathroom and before preparing food.

The disease can also be spread through food, though officials do not believe the outbreak seen in MI is linked to tainted food.

"Hepatitis A is usually a mild virus".

Symptoms of hepatitis A vary and may include loss of appetite, nausea, fatigue, fever, stomachache, dark (cola) colored urine and light colored stools.

She continued the district health department interviews people when there is an acute Hepatitis A outbreak in an effort to reach people with whom the sick has come in contact, because people can benefit from post exposure treatment if it is given within two weeks of the last risk of exposure. They added MI has been working with the CDC to get vaccinations to high-risk populations.
