These 5 healthy habits may help you live longer

At age 50, the men who adhered to these five healthy practices saw their life expectancy increase by 12.2. Researchers looked at about 30 years of data on more than 78,000 women and 44,000 men and found that those who were five-for-five on the aforementioned list had a significantly better life expectancy at age 50 than those who didn't abide by any of the healthy habits.

Compared with people who didn't follow any of the five lifestyle habits, those who followed all five were 74 percent less likely to die during the follow-up period; 82 percent less likely to die from cardiovascular disease and 65 percent less likely to die from cancer.

"It is critical to put prevention first", he said in a statement from the association.

So it seems like adopting a healthy lifestyle with those five habits may not be so bad after all.

The people filled out detailed questionnaires about their health and lifestyle habits every two to four years, with researchers monitoring their adherence to the five behaviors highlighted by the study.

The researchers performed the analysis in the hope of understanding why the USA, which spends more on healthcare as a proportion of GDP than any other nation, ranks 31st in the world for life expectancy at birth.

For the new study, researchers measured the association between those five lifestyle factors and premature death using data from the national Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study.

These data were combined with National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data, as well as mortality data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to estimate the impact of lifestyle factors on life expectancy in the US population. Part of the problem is that many people struggle to give up smoking, and the continuous peddling of unhealthy food, as well as poor urban planning, which can make it hard for people to exercise, also feed in, he said.

The researchers analyzed data from two large studies of USA health professionals, using a sample of nearly 79,000 women and more than 44,300 men.

Body-mass index, a calculation derived from a person's weight and height, is used as a screening tool for body fatness.

"So, in aggregate, we see the effect on longevity, but you can imagine it's largely through effects on cardiovascular risk and metabolic risk", Vaughan said.

Dr. Jack Der-Sarkissian, a family medicine physician and assistant area medical director of Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center, called smoking "the least-debated health risk factor". Nearly 14,000 of these deaths were due to cancer, according to the study, and nearly 10,700 were due to cardiovascular disease.
