Oily Fish Could Stave Off Menopause, According To New Study

The study says that high level consumption of refined carbohydrates, especially white rice and pasta may be responsible for early menopause in middle-aged women.

Women who go through the menopause early are at increased risk of osteoporosis and heart disease, while women who go through it late are at increased risk of breast, womb, and ovarian cancers.

The research, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, drew on data from women in the United Kingdom over a period of four years.

The study drew on data from around 14,000 women in the United Kingdom and included a follow-up survey four years after the initial data was collected. The researchers used the data from more than 14,150 women, all of them residing in the United Kingdom.

Regardless of whether we're dreading it or embracing it, women can expect to go through a ton of changes once menopause hits, and many of them (aside from your period ending, hoorah!), can be unpleasant.

Research by the University of Leeds has examined the links between diet and the onset of menopause in British women. Further information on when the women had gone through the menopause naturally was gathered four years later.

Janet Cade, the professor of nutritional epidemiology and study co-author, said: "The age at which menopause begins can have serious health implications for some women". For example, a woman who routinely eats two portions of fish per day will experience menopause on average three years later than a woman who only eats one portion per day.

Previous research has shown that diet has an influence on menopause, but there have been contradictory findings, Dunnerman said.

"A clear understanding of how diet affects the start of natural menopause will be very beneficial to those who may already be at risk or have a family history of certain complications related to menopause".

"There are a number of causes that have been considered for the relationship between age and start of menopause, such as genetic factors or behavioural and environmental exposures".

Even though the new study is observational and can not prove any cause, the researchers offer some possible explanations behind their findings, according to a BBC report on Tuesday. "But there are fewer studies that look at the impact of diet", lead study author Yashvee Dunneram, a postdoctoral researcher also at the University of Leeds, said in the statement.

Researchers suggest that the release of eggs and maturation can be affected by "reactive oxygen species". In their study in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, the researchers theorize that legumes and oily fish keep menstruation going because they contain or stimulate antioxidants, while the refined carbs have the opposite effect by raising the risk of insulin resistance and interfering with sex hormones.
