CIA Director's Confirmation in Doubt as Sen. McCain Cites "Disturbing" Torture Role

CIA Director's Confirmation in Doubt as Sen. McCain Cites

As a Senate staffer involved in establishing the first postwar congressional oversight over US intelligence agencies, it has been astounding to observe Chairman Richard Burr (R-NC) not only bury the full Senate Intelligence Committee report on the CIA's torture program - but then lead a shuttered confirmation process for a new CIA director who was intimately involved in running the program.

"Half the time he infuriated me, and the other half he inspired me", the Democrat said, expressing hope McCain could one day return to the Senate.

"I absolutely was an advocate", Haspel responded.

She added, "Don't feel bad for me and my family". There is nobody even close to run the CIA!' The agency learned "tough lessons" during "that tumultuous time", Haspel said, and that theexperiencereinforced her "personal commitment, clearly and without reservation", not to restart the CIA's detention and interrogation program.

Haspel was involved in running a 2002 black site prison in Thailand where an Al Qaeda militant was tortured. After growing up around the world as the daughter of a member of the U.S. Air Force, she was drawn to the Central Intelligence Agency by what she felt was the excitement it offered, and picked up the techniques of being an undercover operative very quickly after she joined in 1985.

Interestingly, King's ME colleague, Republican Sen.

"I think Gina Haspel is a patriot who loves our country and has dedicated his professional life to serving the country and its defense... however, its role in the use of torture raises serious concerns", wrote McCain.

Haspel, though, was tasked in 2002 with overseeing a secret Central Intelligence Agency prison in Thailand where prisoners under interrogation were waterboarded, deprived of sleep to the point of danger, physically and psychologically abused and confined in tiny, painful boxes.

Republican Senator John McCain, who was himself tortured while a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, urged lawmakers to vote "no" on Haspel's nomination.

McCain is battling brain cancer at his Arizona home.

Thomas McInerney: "The fact is, is John McCain-it worked on John". Her role there is still mostly classified, and protesters interrupted the hearing by chanting "Bloody Gina" and "Don't reward torture". Haspel remained stone-faced as police escorted them out of the room. It said: "May I remind you my husband has a family, 7 children and 5 grandchildren".

Being in the public spotlight is new for Haspel.

As for the Post, this demonstrates they are not as in favor of strong women as we have been led to believe.

As for the destruction of the tapes, Collins found that Haspel didn't herself destroy the tapes nor supervise their destruction. Jack Reed, D-R.I., asked whether she would report to Congress if Trump were to ask her for a loyalty pledge akin to that he allegedly sought from former FBI Director James Comey.

The CIA investigated too. "Gina Haspel did a spectacular job today". Joe Manchin of West Virginia, to offer support, a sign that her confirmation in the full Senate appears more likely. Just hours earlier, she secured two critical swing votes from Sens.

As CNN opinion writer Carrie Sheffield noted, "Haspel has won the backing of national security officials from the right and left, including former Sen".

"If it were my call, I would not discontinue those programs", Cheney said of the George W. Bush administration's controversial use of so-called enhanced interrogation techniques in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks during an appearance on the Fox Business network on Thursday.

The CIA director position opened up after Mike Pompeo was named secretary of state.
